These are shot mostly wide open to get the background out of focus. Most of the monkey forest pics, are cropped a touch and mainly just warmed up. There might also be small tweaks to exposure, blacks, fill light, vibrance and clarity. Notice the slow shutter speed, it was a dark day and I shot fast and was lucky to get things like this nice and sharp. Thanks to Jon Law for the amazing lens.</div>

Canon 400D and EF-S 55-250 IS</p><div align="center"><strong>As Shot - 235mm / 376mm, 1/350th, f/5.6, ISO 800</strong></div><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311335267279318706" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 267px; height: 400px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPtl-8QsqnTHbQRoC67cNWiBJ9WDrNAgFWAEVV1YAWuNGyjVPXLL8m6C7zod6MDjk6nRXDukW6SNfKk_MK3Ny_h2roPtMAsoTIA38Y9y3J2pCpzguVgqi_ld_TIxSVpmsxDa08B_TBlTw/s400/20080724-_MG_8475.jpg" border="0" /></div><br />Its a bit muted like the other, doesn't have the darks I wanted. Also I didnt like the composition as it was too similer to another I had, so as i missed the square crop, I tried that, seemed quite appealing to me. Took some empty space out of the top, filled the frame entirely.<br /><div>The photo is obviously too contrasty, has too much brightness in some places, and not enough in others. When we look, we see the front of the beak, not the eye, as we probabl should see first.</div><br /><div>You can see below how I tried to rectify this</div><br /><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311335275645774802" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 400px; height: 306px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXjHgznku5ECHIiknbUR1r2tHOxNGVW7TpV3BU1vtjbgqAkM5_y4RqfZlezU4yeevdge-3U-c9rWwOR6iCC-c_XCE9Zc9Ita_wb9kLNGi0POM4HDkUKey135xB8u6aoBdOFGK6vvl-1OU/s400/settings01.jpg" border="0" /><br />This is the result</div><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311337354703042578" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 400px; height: 400px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9f1ZFCh3BiclptD2xkRSJXH7xb36W3Ccd0_5qtysSYbtA5yhz53Hbv4VFP9S8w01IaY7cJZs6gvr3l2dVcUsA5o2q_bvPmY_r5KBscBZ3C72m3vy1ojbO1As9C3n5nk6iBu30KgNCyk/s400/20080724-_MG_8475.jpg" border="0" />As you can see, the features are cool, teh background is cool, but the beak still overpowers the images too much, and the eye is too far gone. So I went to Lightrooms amazing non-destructive adjustmeant brush. The lizard was near the front glass as well, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">which</span> was pretty dirty, luckily <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">there's</span> lots of local contrasting detail in this image to hide it.</p><p>He wasn't moving much so I had plenty of time to compose. The light was also pretty bad.</p><p>This isn't the processing of a RAW file, since I'm starting long ago when I had a bridge camera, however, we can take some hindsight from this, we can progress as I did. The file is a 7.1 MP horribly compressed <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">JPEG</span> from a Kodak Z712IS. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Lightroom</span> is still fine with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">JPEG's</span>, although the image still has the limited fidelity compared to RAW files. </p><p align="center"><strong><span style="font-family:verdana;">As Shot - Approx 180mm, 1/60th, f/3.6, ISO 400</span></strong></p><p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4YUaHqHKGsiczv6vayBd3E8MsvirnAJnywzTLpYblfZaWRJEwFlsMZXJw0ztHkmplpbkGch7_GpWd_6evAJUdyYDWwBdPp-ITUET60OV1pkAAkcabQzYhDOHqtTyjCm6H3VogkRoXXg4/s1600-h/LizardTropicalWorld230108_shot.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4YUaHqHKGsiczv6vayBd3E8MsvirnAJnywzTLpYblfZaWRJEwFlsMZXJw0ztHkmplpbkGch7_GpWd_6evAJUdyYDWwBdPp-ITUET60OV1pkAAkcabQzYhDOHqtTyjCm6H3VogkRoXXg4/s400/LizardTropicalWorld230108_shot.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259299041606194994" /></a><br /></p><p align="center"><strong><span style="font-family:verdana;">On <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Flickr</span></span></strong></p><p><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKnKNiwViyh0LRI4v1PIdE1v20_KsQ76NvYM0k7Uz7bRkF06z_eJOrQVCDUzH3FWJPNV89WUyO0Hw11qCbpqq42Oey89hRxjrORNOz9xNCsV5vVjwuzLKahV449IEAVyjXpvvSYSrBbk/s400/LizardTropicalWorld230108_final.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259299055890794610" /><strong><em>Original Observations:</em> </strong>So here, in the original image, the camera's auto white balance has over-compensated and made it <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">blue-y</span> and murky, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">there's</span> little contrast and its generally a crappy image, but the content is there, the composition is pretty good so I didn't crop, although looking back I could have filled the frame even more and took at the bit of dead space at the top.</p><p align="center"><strong><span style="font-family:verdana;">Lightroom Settings:</span></strong></p><p><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifWy2PvGhuGNcDXG0GMEBMApERmoCtj4jMyEOPBGefQJd2-5o4rDM4Rx4PMfUtDlGgUdd67Get3gUPMC0SQ5bDh0AE_fz-V9-O1LAyb23cPhTenXUpw_BffLM04_T5s9ajTCBVsDcU88g/s400/LizardTropicalWorld230108_LRS.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259299052666364322" /><strong><em>Lightroom Processing:</em> </strong>White Balance is set to Auto, most of the time, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Lightroom</span> is pretty good in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">auto</span> or it's a good start if your camera messed it up, more on white balance when we get to RAW files since this <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">isn'</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">changng</span> the balance but altering the colours. RAW is fine to change it after the fact. Looking back, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">there'</span> lots of yellow going on, I'd be tempted to try make it more <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">eve a</span>cross the gamut.</p><p>Most of the other settings of the Basics panel are self explanatory, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17">vibrance</span> and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18">clarity</span> almost always make my images better. I've yet to use saturation since joining the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_19">Lightroom</span> revolution. </p><p>The curves is where I exerted most control over the tones, the general sign of it is that of more contrast, an 'S' curve. The background and the local contrast has lots of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20">darks</span> as can be seen in the graph behind the curve, so the big change in this curve apart from strong contract across the board is heavy darkening the shadows, contrasting with the other settings, really brings the lizard out of the background like in the final.</p><p>A small <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_21">amount</span> of sharpening, coupled with medium <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_22">amounts</span> of noise reduction, on an image so <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_23">knackered</span> by noise it'll never be reduced, just equals sharp spotty <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_24">artifacts</span>, i did this really wrong and a large print would be ruined by this, small on a screen a 7.1 MP image get survive this. I should have taken it into <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_25">Photoshop</span>, halved the size in pixels, and used a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_26">plug-in</span> like <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_27">Noiseware</span> on it. More on that in the future.</p><p>Finally, the vignette, at the time, I corrected the vignette of the lens, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_28">effectively</span> creating no vignette, this was a mistake, i should have applied a strong vignette to further focus on the lizard, this image with a dark background lends itself to this. It would have also lessened the rays from the top, which I could have also lessened by using the colur controls in lightrooms to chill out the orange's only.<br /></p>An old image, but one I liked at the time, more soon.Aron Durkinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09868998222220656163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6743002944032016220.post-62808590086490974192008-10-20T01:28:00.002+01:002008-10-20T02:03:26.811+01:00First Post - IntroHello!<br /><p>OK so this blog works in conjunction with <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arondurkin/">this <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">flickr</span> account</a></p><p>This idea being I will show before and after from the original RAW file I shot against the final image I posted, with a small description of what I did and why, hopefully this will help <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">beginers</span> learn how to take a good image, and make it a great one, and in some cases, do the thing we're not supposed to and make a bad image a good one with fancy processing, whoops! I mean yes, its important to get it right in camera, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">uhuh</span>!</p><p>By the way I'm not like a pro photographer or anything, I'm actually <a href="http://www.arondurkin.com/">an animator</a> in the games industry, photography is just a hobby and passion.</p><p>And before you ask, I use a Canon 400D (Digital Rebel XTi - cheapest DSLR I could find) with the evil 18-55 Kit lens, the Canon 55-250IS which rocks, and the cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 MK2. Anything else special I will mention in individiual posts</p><p>I process my files almost 95% of the time through lightroom alone, this isnt a tutorial on cheating and painting, I cant paint to save my life, just simple, creative processing.</p><p>photos coming soon!</p>Aron Durkinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09868998222220656163noreply@blogger.com0
